Intentions and Theorems, Continued

My Intention with This Blog · Intentions and Theorems, Continued · Which Groups are not Main Ones and Why?

Suppose we find lots of "adjacent" groups (like Celtic Germanic, Celtic Italic, Germanic Italic, Germanic (Illyric) Greek, Italic (Illyric) Greek) preserving a word not preserved at "opposite end" of the geographical spread of Indo-European language group.

Couldn't this be just the chance that adjacency tends to help adjacent groups to help each other to keep a word?

Well, adjacency would help them to keep the word, but lack of it would not doom the word at the opposite end of the geographical spread.

So, the Sprachbund theorem (by Trubetskoy, for those who do not know the founder of Balkan linguistics) would get a boost if "adjacent" plus "previously adjacent" groups were very prevalent in the preservation of words.

And the proto-language or PIE theorem (by lots, from Bopp and Grimm to Pokorny, whose lexicon I am using) would equally get a boost from non-adjacent groups being nearly as many, and therefore like in words of three groups, the diverse combinations coming equal, since that would mean, the adjacent groups had not come to share more words by Sprachbund phenomena than they initially share by common descent.

In the intention, I will now start to publish all the articles already made, and I will start to connect them, like "3 : Gm, Gr, Ind" to the correct slot on the "groups of three" post.

As I then continue the lexicon of Pokorny, I will add new words to posts already published, up to five words per post, and if more than five turn up, there will be, for instance, "3 : Gm, Gr, Ind, pt II" and so on. The updating of a post already published will be done anyway to the posts of the type "groups of three"* and so on, since more and more of their slots will be filled with links to words actually extant with those combinations of groups.

* I meant "three main groups" - that is groups outside Tokharic, Hittite, other extinct groups and outside Albanian, which has so much IE vocabulary from neighbouring groups on the Balkan.

2 main groups 3 main groups 4 main groups

5 main groups 6 main groups 7 main groups

8 main groups 9 main groups all ten groups
